Things To Look Out For When Having A Party Band

June 27, 2011 | Author: | Posted in Music

Have you been unsure how to hire a live band? This is a good place to get started! If you have been given the job of organising an event such as a wedding reception, graduation or any other party, it is vital that you find the right band to entertain your guests.

Planning a wedding or other party is a huge undertaking by the organiser. There are so many details to think about and so much work to do. One of the most essential parts of the planning process is to start arranging for the entertainment, and particularly the music, at your reception.

There are different ways that you can supply the entertainment, but the choices you usually have is typically a DJ or a live band. Live music can really add so much to your party. However what things should you look into before hiring a band?

Initially try and choose a band that the majority of your guests are going to enjoy watching and listening to. To do this, why not ask some of your guests what they would like to see? Many event organisers do not bother to do this and just go with their own musical tastes which could be a big mistake.

The next thing is to try and see the band performing live. In general, most bands also perform in public and not only at private parties and events. Alternatively, ask them for a CD or preferably a video. This will give you a good idea of whether the band will be a good fit for your reception.

It is important to know the expertise of the music band before hiring them. You need to know how professional they are and how long they have been playing together as a band. Most bands have individual and group biographies on their website. This will give you an idea of the calibre of the party band as a whole.

The band should have a website and this is definitely the best place to start your search. On the site, you should find photos, recorded music and, if you are lucky, a video. All bands should have a website these days.

If you are lucky enough to come across testimonials on the website, you will want to read through them in order to see just how much their previous customers enjoyed their music. If the repertoire of the band is listed, you will want to pay attention to that.

So, try to choose a band whose music is going to appeal to the majority of the audience. Try finding a band whose music suits different age groups. Something like progressive jazz music or heavy rock for example will only appeal to a small minority. Something like 70′s soul or disco usually appeals to most age groups.

Settle the price with them before you contract them to play at the event. Be sure to have an initial conversation with the band manager. Once you have fixed the price, ask for a contract. Be sure to pay your non-refundable deposit to make sure the date of your event is secured.

About a week before the event, give the band manager a call to confirm the final details. You can check their playlist as well and ask about dress code if you wish to ensure everything will be as you want it to be.

Don’t forget that the band is likely to have traveled a long way to play. Please provide them with food and drink either before or during the break in their performance. Lastly, give them a written timetable of events so that they know what time you want them to start playing.
