Many people are now considering converting their basement into a living area and it’s easy to see why; the costs of conversion are much lower than the costs of extending a house and a new room could be created in a small amount of time. While the structural planning of a basement conversion is much simpler, the majority of basements usually require waterproofing. Due to basements being below ground level and surrounded by earth, water can build up around the walls and under the floor of the room. This water build up will eventually put pressure on the structure and can begin to crack the walls and floor. Once these cracks appear, signs of damp and mould will follow and if the water is allowed to remain in the room, serious structural damage could occur.
