Do you possess room that may benefit from a ceiling fan? Installing a ceiling fan by yourself is relatively easy, if you are simply replacing a light fixture that is already in the appropriate location. Virtually all of the cabling you need is already available so the only thing is to change the current workbox with one that is made for the weight of a ceiling fan. It would be very dangerous if you do not exchange your current workbox to something that can manage the extra weight of the ceiling fan. Before you begin your project, go through the directions for the fan you have selected, and make certain that you have all of the essential tools.
If you plan to setup the fan on a cathedral type ceiling, then you may want to get parts to extend the fan lower. Given that you are prepared for the actual installation, ensure that the breaker is put off, so no power is going to the light you are changing. Anytime you take out the light fixture, examine to see if the current workbox can cope with the extra weight. Most workboxes are not aimed for ceiling fans, you will need added support. This is usually done rather easily if you have access to the attic, and are able to get to the location of the new fan.
To extra support, you nail a 2×4 inside the ceiling rafters where it touches the top of the workbox. Once the 2×4 is properly anchored, attach the workbox to the 2×4. If everything is done properly, the excess weight of the fan will now be fully supported by the wood and the screws. If you are unable to do it from the attic space or you have no attic, you will want to add a cross bracing in your ceiling. This is harder to do, and most likely not as secure in the end, but will have to do with no attic entry.
When you have gathered the fan carefully, you are now ready to hang your fan. The issue is to hold onto the fan while attaching the wiring. The difficulty is according to the form of fan you have, whether it is a hanging frame or a fan that has a bracket with a J hook. Majority of fans have a chain to control the speed of the fan and the wall switch turns the product on or off. If you determine to also install a light kit with the fan, both can be operated by either chain or wall switch.
The next task is to go by the wiring instructions which are as basic as joining two white wires, two black wires and two ground wires. Now all you want to do is finish assembling the fan according to the guidelines, by hanging the fan blades. Immediately after you attach the blades, the only thing left is to change the breaker back on to see if you did it right.
